Can a hobby make money?SCOTT & KATHY GRIFFITH |
| You can make a financial success of your hobby if you enjoy what you do and have the determination to succeed. Set goals for yourself, both long and short term, include rates of production as well as rewards for reaching each goal. Put your goals on paper and post it prominently as a reminder of your direction and purpose. Recognize the various benefits of your hobby beyond the monetary aspect, such as the creativity you are developing, the chance to share your talents and being open to new ideas. | ![]() |
| Now that your goals are laid out and your inventory is growing, it is time to market yourself and your products. Check your work place, many employers allow their creative employees to sell handmade items. Use your products yourself and present them as gifts, this can generate sales and provide so much valuable feedback. Keep an eye out for craft shows, many churches and other community associations sponsor these as fund raisers. Before the sales start, be sure to group and use signs for descriptive information and pricing. Index cards can be handy signs, keep the handwriting neat and professional. Signs should identify the items and if a pen include which refill is needed, if a clock what battery is required. It is imperative that all clutter be removed from the display area. Boxes covered in solid colored fabrics can provide different levels of display areas. | |

Be prepared with packaging material kept behind your table, a box of assorted bags and protective wrappings. You can have gift boxes available at a small cost, customers are often willing to pay your cost for a proper gift box. Be sure every item purchased is wrapped with a business card in the package. Lastly, be sure to dress neatly, smile and have small bills available for making change. Be friendly, informative and helpful and enjoy yourself! |
