| PREPARING THE BLANKS Cut three blanks 5/8" to 3/4" (or larger, depending on your design) to the length of the brass tubes. Add 1/16" to the length for trimming off. Drill a 7-mm center hole through each blank. Spread glue over the brass tube insert into the blanks with a twisting motion to spread the glue evenly inside. When the glue dries, square the end of each blank using a barrel trimmer. |

Diagram C - Turning the Blanks |
|
| TURNING THE BLANKS Place three or four spacer bushings onto the mandrel shaft. Insert one of the blanks over the shaft; follow with a 7-mm bushing. Insert a second blank, follow by another 7-mm bushing and a third blank also followed by a 7-mm bushing. Fill the gap with spacers. Thread the lock nut hand tight. |
Bring the tailstock snug against the mandrel shaft. Lock in place (Do not over tighten, it may damage the mandrel) now, tighten the lock nut. Draw a design or a profile for turning the handle. Use lathe tools to turn the wood down to size. Use a caliper to determine the diameter. Sand the wood and finish with friction polish or use a clear hi-gloss project finish off the lathe. |
