TURNING AND FINISHING BUFFALO HORN (PB-1690)

Indian River Buffalo Horn is sourced from managed, domesticated herds that are maintained under the auspices of the Indian Dept. of Husbandry and Dairy. This material has been specifically selected from the most aged animals at the end of their productive life and is obtained post slaughter. None of these horns come from animals that are simply being killed for their horns.

Note: It is highly recommended to wear a nose protection mask when turning and sanding horn.

For best results, cut the horn blank to the proper length with a band saw.We recommend using a carbide tip drill bit if available. Drilling at 1,500 RPM will give the best results. A good HSS drill bit will also work.

Glue in the tubes and mount the blanks on the mandrel for turning. Use good HSS, sharp tools. To avoid the blanks from spinning on the shaft, increase the speed of the lathe when starting. Use a light touch until the corners are eliminated. Proceed with normal speed while reducing size of the blanks.

For sanding, you may try wetting the abrasives throughout the sanding process. This will keep the horn cool and will reduce the volume of dust created.

For finishing, you may use Shellawax friction polish (either liquid or cream), or use Novus High Gloss, 2 part plastic polish system for a high gloss scratch-free surface. The horn will finish to a very high luster when done correctly. (The finished horn will have a Blue-Grey translucent shade to it).
